The Power of the Dog genomineerd voor twaalf Oscars
The Power of the Dog
Bijna dertig jaar na haar laatste Oscarnominatie (voor The Piano) komt Jane Champion weer voor in de lijstjes met kanshebbers voor de moeder aller filmprijzen. The Power of the Dog werd maar liefst twaalf keer genomineerd – twee keer minder dan het recordaantal. Dune volgt op de voet met tien nominaties.
The Power of the Dog maakt kans in alle belangrijke categorieën van de Oscars, die op 27 maart worden uitgereikt. De ‘revisionistische western’, over de onwaarschijnlijke band die op de prairie ontstaat tussen een ongepolijste macho en een papkindje, dingt mee naar de prijs voor beste film en beste regie. Hoofdrolspeler Benedict Cumberbatch kan de prijs voor beste acteur krijgen, terwijl Kirsten Dunst kans maakt op de onderscheiding voor beste vrouwelijke bijrol en zowel Jesse Plemons en Kodi Smit-McPhee op het lijstje staan voor beste mannelijke bijrol.
Als The Power of the Dog de prijs wint voor beste film is dat een primeur voor Netflix. De streamingdienst aast al jaren op de hoofdprijs maar wist die nog nooit te winnen. De concurrentie in deze categorie bestaat uit Dune, Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley en West Side Story.
De nominatielijst voor beste film bevat dit jaar tien titels om een zo groot mogelijke diversiteit te garanderen. Maar ook uit de invulling van andere categorieën blijkt dat het de Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences menens is met het omarmen van minderheden. Denzel Washington kan zijn tiende nominatie bijschrijven, voor zijn acteerprestatie in The Tragedy of Macbeth, en is daarmee de meest genomineerde zwarte acteur in de Oscar-geschiedenis. Will Smith, die de hoofdrol speelt maar ook de producent is van King Richard, is de twee zwarte acteur om genomineerd te worden in de categorieën beste film en beste acteur. Troy Kotsur maakt met CODA kans de eerste dove acteur te zijn die een Oscar wint. En de Deense animatiefilm Flee, die als eerste film ooit genomineerd werd voor beste animatiefilm, beste documentaire en beste buitenlandse film, gaat over een homoseksuele Afghaanse vluchteling.
