The Thinking Machine #83

Second Nature

In their series The Thinking Machine, critics Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin create a new video essay for Filmkrant every month.

Certain works by the filmmakers Franco Piavoli (born 1933 in Italy) and Artavazd Pelechian (born 1938 in Georgia) intersect in fascinating ways. They have both developed a very personal style of cinema, responding to the mythological and cosmological dimensions of nature. Through intense and idiosyncratic montage forms, they weave polyphonic odes to the cycles of the natural world. Our audiovisual essay interweaves, across two screens, Piavoli’s The Blue Planet (1981) and Pelechian’s The Seasons (1975).
