The Thinking Machine #52

Open the Doors

In their series The Thinking Machine, critics Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin create a new video essay for De Filmkrant every month.

From westerns to science fiction, from musicals to melodrama, a certain intensely cinematic trope recurs: the silent view of a closed door is suddenly torn apart by the raucous sight and sound of a stampeding crowd. They might be rushing for a show, for a sale, for a drink, for air – it doesn’t matter, what counts is the visceral thrill of going from emptiness to fullness, on all levels. It can be a feeling of freedom… or of apocalypse.
