The Thinking Machine 1

In their new series The Thinking Machine, critics Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin will create a new video essay for De Filmkrant every month. This first installment focuses on The Girl on a Motorcycle.

The Girl on a Motorcycle (Jack Cardiff, 1969) is a film which is built upon two different kinds of movement: an expansive movement through space signaled by acceleration and speed; and an immersive movement toward memories signaled by ecstatic freezes and zooms. By staging the encounter of these two movements, the film creates its own version of the death-drive.
