Series of Dreams Interwoven by Ringing Bells

Adrian Martin and Cristina Álvarez López reflect on the art of filmmaking in monthly video essays.

Bells of diverse kinds can have a realistic, informative function in films, or carry a strong, dramatic intention – often associated with reveries, fantasies and memories. The ringing of bells traces a hypnotic, musical landscape that, in its rich tonal and harmonic variety, immerses us and calls us to dream, to float above the fictional worlds. Our “series of dreams” interweaves fragments from films by Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman, Robert Bresson, Luis Buñuel and Sergei Parajanov.
